Real stories from our Forests

What came as a wonderful surprise is the reverence the staff added to our Forest Memorial. They guided us through returning our loved one to the earth .

Chris B. Lake Arrowhead Forest, California

The process of selecting a tree was deeply spiritual . I am a tree-hugging conservationist and Better Place Forests is exactly what I had in mind for my ashes.

This is a thoughtful, environmentally smart approach to end-of-life. I appreciate that my children will have a place other than a cemetery to visit.

Better Place Forests is the perfect place for us. The idea of being out in nature under our tree gives us such a feeling of peace.

I think having a tree, having a place out in nature is so different.  Instead of showing my son a plot in a cemetery I can show him a tree. It’s a chance to teach him about renewal and that life carries on.

Mother Teresa said, "Peace begins with a smile." My wild black cherry tree in the Rock River Forest brings a smile and a sense of peace, instead of angst.

Picking out a tree, a symbol of family and strength, felt right. My parent's tree is more than a place to visit, it’s a symbolic reminder of our connection.

I have spent many days walking in the forest. When you listen to the birds, the wind, the rustling of leaves… it’s a monumental, picturesque experience.

There’s something very magical about picking out your tree and knowing that you’ll become a part of that ecosystem.  In a way, you’ll live on in the future.

Commonly asked questions

Does Better Place Forests offer cremation?

Better Place Forests does not provide cremation services. Our guides can advise you in choosing a local funeral home or crematorium.

What if I want to add additional people or pets to my tree in the future?

If you choose to add people or pets to your tree later down the line, you can purchase additional spreading rights for $2,500 per person and $300 per pet.

How many sets of ashes can I spread at my tree?

To ensure your tree stays healthy, there are some limits to the amount of ashes that can be spread at your tree in a given year. Over time, you can share your tree with many loved ones – there’s room for great-great-grandchildren! Talk to a guide to learn more about the limits by tree size and species.

What does “the right to spread ashes” really mean?

The end-of-life industry is highly regulated. In most states, you need legal permission to scatter or spread ashes. When you purchase a memorial tree, our contract states that you and any successors you choose have an irrevocable license right to spread ashes at the base of your tree. This license right is a real property interest that is recorded by Better Place Forests with the county in which your memorial tree is located.

How does a memorial tree compare to traditional options?

The average burial, plot, and headstone costs around $15,000 per person. We offer a range of prices for any budget — some at less than half the cost of a traditional burial. Talk to one of our guides to learn about available trees that fit your budget.
