Better Place Forests creates and maintains conservation memorial forests for people who choose cremation and don’t want their ashes to end up in a traditional cemetery.

We’re so proud and humbled to be recognized as one of Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas for 2020 as a finalist for Spaces, Places and Cities, a finalist for Health and Wellness, and an honorable mention for World Changing Ideas – North America. We want to take a moment to thank our customers for believing in our mission and for trusting us during one of life’s most important decisions. It’s because of you that we are driven to continue innovating.

These lists feature ideas focused on social good and seeking to elevate finished products and brave concepts that make the world better. They honor companies with potential to effect true systems change with entire new consumer categories. A panel of eminent judges selected winners and finalists from a pool of more than 3,000 entries across transportation, education, food, politics, technology, and more.

“At Better Place Forests, our mission is to inspire everyone to leave a meaningful legacy for the planet and the people they love,” says co-founder and CEO Sandy Gibson. “We’re building Better Place Forests with families and their loved ones, our customers, in mind. They want a sense of peace. They want natural beauty. They want to leave a positive legacy. We’re so grateful for our customers and their trust in us. We do this work for them.”

Thank you to our customers

At Better Place Forests, one of our core values is to “Remember our Why”, and our ‘why’ is certainly focused on our customers and respecting the significance of their decision. To hear some of their stories, go here.

Mark: “This opportunity is so special and exciting. No other option better supports our parents’ conservation and environmental philosophy. They loved the forest, the outdoors, and the preservation of open space.”

Spencer, whose late wife Sheila has a tree in our Point Arena Forest, shares his experience: “We found the Better Place Forests team to be professional, courteous, and above all, helping us every step of the way. When I come here and sit at Sheila’s tree, it’s a remarkable place. I can really let my mind relax and think back of her. Being among the Redwoods, it’s so cleansing and so healing. It has reinforced my belief a thousand percent in the fact that there is more to come. We didn’t look at it…as a sad event. We looked at it as a new beginning.” [To hear Spencer and Sheila’s story, go here.]

About Better Place Forests

Better Place Forests is the end-of-life company that built America’s first conservation memorial forests –– beautiful, sustainable alternatives to cemeteries for people who choose cremation. We offer an end-of-life experience that is uplifting, empowering and personal by enabling you to return your ashes to the earth, underneath a protected memorial tree. By creating beautiful memorial spaces that resonate with you and your loved ones, we establish, maintain and protect forestland for generations to come.

We collaborate with local communities to conserve and maintain the health of our forests. And through our Impact Tree program with One Tree Planted, we plant additional trees to help with critical reforestation efforts. Every person who chooses a tree in one of our forests helps to conserve and preserve forestland. In 2019 we planted over 10,000 Impact Trees — which, once matured — sequester over 3,630,000 pounds of C02 per year and is the equivalent of taking approximately 360 cars off the road. We are committed to planting over 50,000 Impact Trees in 2020.

“There seems no better time to recognize organizations that are using their ingenuity, resources, and, in some cases, their scale to tackle society’s biggest problems,” says Stephanie Mehta, editor-in-chief of Fast Company. “Our journalists, under the leadership of senior editor Morgan Clendaniel, have uncovered some of the smartest and most inspiring projects of the year.”

Thank you to our customers for trusting us to help them build their lasting legacies. We’re certain we wouldn’t have this recognition without your support.
