Noble and charismatic, Ponderosas welcome visitors with a butterscotch aroma.

  • Fire-resistant species whose very thick, plately orange bark protects it at maturity
  • Its bark grows thicker and more furrowed as it ages
  • Can live to be 400 to 600 years old
  • Has a symbiotic relationship with Abert squirrels: squirrels dig up truffles and spread spores; ponderosa need the fungus spores to make nitrogen and other important nutrients that are unavailable to the roots alone
  • Its bark has an amazing vanilla/butterscotch aroma that permeates the air on warm days

  • See spectacular spring wildflowers and some of the largest, most mature trees here
  • Hear water trickling gently through the rocks as the Sierra snowpack melts
  • Celebrate the wildlife that live here: butterflies, mule deer, jackrabbits and more

Spectacular in spring when the wildflowers are blooming, this section offers the best views of Orchard Meadow along with some of the largest, most mature trees in the forest.

Orchard Meadowview is conveniently located and visible from the Welcome Area.

A small seasonal creek winds along the northern edge of this section. When the Sierra snowpack melts, you can hear the gentle soundtrack of the water trickling down the rocks.

Bountiful sunshine and a mix of rolling hills with lush grass make this a favorite spot for local wildlife. Butterflies, mule deer, and jackrabbits all call this mountain meadow home.
