Strong yet humble, this hardy tree is extremely attractive, with fruit that resembles hops, gently serrated leaves, and smooth grey bark.

  • One of the hardest and strongest woods, second only to dogwood
  • Known for its beautiful foliage and large clusters of bell-shaped white flowers in the spring
  • The flowers and buds are the most important food source for ruffed grouse
  • Many birds including quail and turkey eat its fruits

  • Easily reach this section from the Welcome Area – yet feel deep in the forest
  • Enjoy vibrant seasons here, with rich greens, bright wildflowers, and fiery leaves
  • Spot abundant wetland wildlife like deer, turkeys and a variety of songbirds

Conveniently located down a short woodland path, West Canopy Lane is an easy walk from the Welcome Area. This section has a true “heart of the forest” feel, where quiet surroundings amplify the sounds of nature. West Canopy Lane feels deep in the woods yet is still very accessible.

The northern edge of this section borders a natural protected wetland, preserving habitat for local wildlife like white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and various songbirds.

In warmer months, patches of ferns dot the forest floor, bringing it to life in lush greens. Wildflowers like geraniums, starflowers, and trefoils add pops of color to the understory.

Autumn transforms the oak and maple trees, bringing fiery red and orange hues to the canopy overhead. The leaves of bigtooth aspens burst into bright yellow and gold in a nearby grove.
