From their distinctive red bark to their seasonal flowers, madrones are forever striking.

  • Broad-leafed evergreen tree
  • Known for its rich, orange-red bark that peels away, leaving a greenish, silvery appearance on the trunk
  • Supports a broad, beautiful canopy of deep green leaves
  • Supports livelihood of hummingbirds, songbirds and 18 species of butterflies and moths
  • Has bright clusters of red, strawberry-shaped berries in the fall; the name madrono translates to strawberry tree
  • Sprays of white, bell-shaped flowers decorate its branches in spring

  • Sits above Soquel Creek, protecting this vital ecosystem
  • Elevated sections feel peaceful and private
  • Features many mature madrone trees and a highly-limited number of Coastal live oaks
  • Partial mountaintop views from the main path

This ridge delivers partial mountaintop views that can be seen from the main pathway, while hiking trails take you higher into the forest, giving you the distinct feeling of being elevated above the rest of the forest — perfect for those seeking a private moment of peace.

Madrone Ridge sits above Soquel Creek, a 16+ mile long creek that flows down to Monterey Bay, with numerous tributaries feeding into it. Through our commitment to forest protection, we are contributing to the health of the riparian ecosystem it provides. Riparian vegetation provides temperature regulation, shade, and bank stabilization.

Filled with spectacular trees, this is where you’ll find some of the best madrone specimens available, as well as an extremely limited number of evergreen Coast Live Oaks. Afternoon lighting is spectacular year-round while, in the winter, a dense fog sits on the ridge, creating the serene sense of walking in the clouds.

Giving the peaceful feeling of being deep in the forest, this section is ideal for those seeking picturesque privacy.
