  • Can grow up 110 feet tall with a max diameter of 25 inches
  • Under ideal conditions, Shagbark Hickory trees can live up to 200 years
  • Its wood is used by barbecue enthusiasts for the wonderful smoked flavor it imparts to food
  • Hickory wood is known for being strong and shock-resistant, making it ideal for crafting tools and equipment

  • Take an easy five-minute walk for water views of Rock River with hunting blue herons and eagles
  • Stroll among oak and hackberry trees, which feed mockingbirds and robins in winter
  • Spot wildlife year-round like turkeys, deer, and small woodland creatures

This section sits slightly back from the river on an elevated slope connecting the riverside to the deeper forest. Through the trees you can see filtered water views.

You’ll also spot abundant wildlife year round, like wild turkeys, deer, and other small woodland animals.

Oak and hackberry trees make up the majority of trees in this section. In winter, mockingbirds and robins feed on the hackberries, and in summer many butterfly species flutter through the air.

An easy five minute walk from the Welcome House, Riverside Rise is the most conveniently located section of the forest.

Trees here are separated by a small ravine that runs through the southern portion of the section.
