The most conveniently located section of the forest, Homestead Grove is a short, easy walk from the Welcome House and parking area.

Soft thickets of bracken fern carpet the forest floor. The lush understory in this area of the forest is a rare find in Arizona, as it only grows at higher elevations where summers are cool and moist.

This section has a true “heart of the forest” feel, where quiet surroundings amplify the sounds of nature. Homestead Grove feels deep in the woods yet is still easily accessible.

Located at the edge of the foothills and leading to the base of the tallest peaks in Arizona, Sunset Meadowview fully captures the essence of this forest. 

It also features the most diverse mix of tree species compared to other sections. You’ll find charismatic ponderosa pines, resilient white pines, and stately douglas firs here. 

Rock outcroppings along the forest floor add a distinctive element, providing natural places to sit and enjoy filtered views of the meadow.

An immersive wilderness experience, Ponderosa Ridge is reachable by an easy hike through the meadow below. Trails along the edge of the forest ensure that the meadow habitat is preserved and remains as undisturbed as possible.

Flagstaff is well known for being home to the largest pure stand of ponderosa pine in the country — and Ponderosa Ridge features a towering grove of these pines that is worthy of this prestige.
