Forever golden, this sunny tree is known for its yellow bark and wintergreen aroma

  • Named for its shiny golden, curling strips of peeling bark when mature
  • Grows up to 100 feet tall and up to 4 feet in diameter
  • Leaves and twigs give off a refreshing wintergreen aroma and flavor when crushed
  • Tea is made from the inner bark, twigs and leaves, and is believed to have many medicinal properties
  • Its bark is waterproof and was used historically by Native Americans to cover canoes and dwellings, and for buckets to carry water

  • Easily reach this section, yet feel deep in the woods – with the best mountain views
  • Enjoy a diverse mix of trees, including some of the tallest and oldest sugar maples
  • Spot abundant wildlife like deer, bears, foxes and more, along with vibrant blooms in spring

Maplewood Ridge runs parallel to Mountainview Meadow and contains the most diverse mix of tree species in the entire forest. Some of the largest and oldest sugar maples can be found here.

As you walk deeper into the forest, the terrain becomes more rugged and rises up from the meadow on a gentle slope, evoking a feeling of being deep in the woods.

An easy five minute walk from the Welcome House, Maplewood Ridge is the most conveniently located section of the forest.
