FOREST STORIES

The Perfect Place

A family finds the ideal spot to gather and honor Tony’s legacy

Making Plans

It all began with a lighthearted moment shared between a couple who had been together for nearly four decades. When Tony was bedridden, his wife Alice jokingly suggested they both be cremated and have their ashes scattered in the ocean. Tony’s playful response, “But I can’t swim,” sparked laughter…and a search for a fitting alternative.

“One day I said to him, ‘Why don’t we both get cremated and the kids can toss us in the ocean?’

He looked at me perplexed and said, ‘But I can’t swim!’ We both laughed.”

A Love for Nature

Tony, a professional musician and a gentle soul from West Virginia, found joy in the simple things—and the beauty of nature. Moving to California, he continued his passion for music while nurturing a family with his wife, Alice. Together, they shared 39 years of marriage, becoming soulmates and loving parents to their five children.

When it came time to choose their resting place, Alice searched for a natural alternative to traditional burial and found Better Place Forests Point Arena. When she asked Tony about making a redwood tree his forever home, he loved that idea and so did she.

Finding Their Tree

“We both love the redwoods here in California,” explains Alice. “Tony called me his tree hugger. He said, ‘You pick out the tree because you LOVE trees, I know you will pick the perfect one.’”

Entrusted to choose the perfect redwood Memorial Tree, Alice selected a stunning moss-covered redwood stump that proudly stands as a reminder of their bond.

“It’s such a lovely place.

The redwoods are like a cathedral.

It’s a peaceful and spiritual place.”

A Celebration of Life

The forest was a perfect place for the extended family to gather and celebrate Tony’s life. Alice waited until what would have been Tony’s 80th birthday to hold his Forest Memorial. There was no question, everyone wanted to come, even the grandkids. “None of us really wept because we knew he would be at rest,” shares Alice. “That brings me peace and closure.”

“The memorial marker was easy to figure out—perfect and to the point.”

Lasting Memories

The family embraced Tony’s decision to become part of the forest. “I have two cats, and want them to be spread with me at the tree as well when I pass,” shares Alice. “The kids were totally accepting of it and love that’s what we chose.”

While she’s not sure if her adult children plan on joining her and Tony at their Memorial Tree, she loves knowing that they are welcome to join them if they would like.
